Approach

Grounded in Possibility. Driven by Purpose.

The Maryland School for the Blind uses a personalized and holistic approach to education. Our team of dedicated educators, therapists, and specialists design learning experiences that foster growth in academics, social-emotional development, and independence. We recognize that every learner is unique—so we meet students where they are and help them reach their fullest potential.

Academic Rigor + Life Readiness

Our curriculum blends Maryland State Department of Education standards with the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC)—a framework tailored to the needs of students who are blind or visually impaired. This dual focus ensures students gain not only academic skills but also essential life skills that prepare them for college, careers, and independent living.

Core Academics

Math, reading, science, and more—adapted for all levels of visual ability.

ECC Areas

Orientation & mobility, assistive technology, social interaction, sensory efficiency, and self-advocacy.

Progress You Can See. Growth You Can Feel. Matters

Every student’s path at MSB is personalized—but the foundation is consistent: we nurture progress across academic, personal, and functional domains. Our approach is designed to help students build confidence, independence, and purpose—step by step.

Phase 1: Foundational Learning & Discovery

Students begin by exploring how they learn best. Through assessments and early support, we tailor instruction and accommodations to unlock their strengths. Braille literacy, sensory development, and early communication skills are key focus areas here.

Phase 2: Skill Building & Academic Growth

In this stage, students engage deeply with academic content through adaptive materials and targeted instruction. Simultaneously, they continue building skills in the Expanded Core Curriculum—empowering them to take ownership of their learning.

Phase 3: Real-World Readiness & Transition

Older students transition to real-world applications of their learning—whether through career exploration, independent living training, or college prep. The goal is independence with dignity.

Ongoing Collaboration & Evaluation

Progress at MSB is never static. We involve students, families, therapists, and educators in regular review cycles to adjust goals and support at every phase of development.
